Abstract: We consider noisy functional data Yt(si) = Xt(si) + εti that has been recorded at a discrete set of observation points. Naturally, the goal is to recover the underlying signal Xt. We show that under very mild assumptions, the signal may be viewed as the common components of a factor model, which may be consistently recovered using a PCA driven approach. Our theoretical results hold under rather mild conditions, in particular we do not require specific smoothness assumptions for the underlying curves and allow for a certain degree of autocorrelation in the noise.
